Panificio Bonci: Reviews & Ratings

Finally , a place in Rome I can actually yelp about. Lol. One of the frustrations as a yelper is that most restaurants in Italy (and Europe in general) don't have yelp pages . I know you can always create one, but what's the point if no one's really writing reviews or using the app (google reviews is more common here) Anyways, onto the actual review . I discovered this place through some social media research that mentioned this super viral spot. It said that there's always lines out the door. It was only a few blocks away from where I was staying, so naturally, I gave it a go. This was my very first time trying pizza in Italy fyi. I got the margarita square sliced pizza and tried a suppli. Now as a New Yorker, I'd like to think I'm a connoisseur when it comes to knowing good pizza. I've seen videos where tourists take a dramatic bite into the slice of pizza they're having in Italy and claim it's the most life-changing thing that's ever happened to them. I usually roll my eyes and assume they come from some place that isn't a food Mecca. I feel like nothing could be that dramatic for me when it comes to pizza because as a New Yorker, the standards for pizzas are pretty good so the difference would be marginal. Oh my, was I wrong!! This was the best pizza I've ever had! It's a simple margarita, but its dough was probably focaccia or something similar to it because the pizza didn't feel heavy to me. It felt light, airy, and just yummy yummy! I also tried a suppli for the first time and I feel that alone was a meal (I have a small stomach, so take what I said with a grain of salt). It was crispy on the outside and the inside had cheese , rice and pasta. I loved it! I only later realized that this place was featured in a Netflix series, and the founder is actually super famous and a pioneer in the pizza making field! Anyways, definitely come and try this place! I was fortunate to come on a December weekday and it wasn't crowded at all. I can't wait to come back to Rome and try this place again.

This pizza joint was recommended by the airbnb host, the line was long when we visited, pizza was good. There is a little table and chairs next to the shop so you can enjoy the pizza there.

The pizza is as delicious as its reputation. It is counter service, so plan to take out or eat outside. The location is within walking distance from the Vatican, but not all that close. Either way, the pizza is superb.

A smaller satellite location of the Pizzarium with plenty of slices AND baked goods like croissants and pane. There is a line (you grab a number and wait outside) but it is not nearly as long as the original location. Be sure to try the potato with ricotta and the butternut squash slices - everything here is good but those were excellent. Also grab a few bombolinis, suppli, and croissants on the side - perfect for a mid-day meal on-the-go!

As we were on our way to the new Bonci location, our cabbie informed us that if we wanted to go where Bonci got his start, then the Panificio Bonci was the place to be. To be clear, this is a bread shop that also sells pizza. The Pizzeria Bonci is primarily a pizza store, so if you're looking for the "crazy" pizza, as our cabbie illustrated, then the pizzeria is your joint. The Panificio is a delightful little neighborhood bread and pastry shop that has a limited selection of pizza but the pizza does NOT disappoint. I went with high expectations, and my expectations were exceeded. The thing I couldn't get out of my head, was why is it that I have tried three different places in Rome already (this place included) and the crust is fabulously crispy? And why have I not had a similar experience in the states? I mean, stateside we've been chasing after the Neapolitan style where Roman pizza is a pan style, but why does that make it consistently so much better? I adore pizza, and have eaten my weight in it, but why am I being surprised by "Roman" pizza all of a sudden? Is it the pan? Is it the addition of more oil? Is it the flour? Either way, the crunch on this slice (do you still call it a slice...?) was/is unforgettable. I could tell you what we had but each piece was just as fun and delicious as the next, so forget my recommendation and just get whatever. I honestly don't think you can be disappointed. Side-note we also shared a small lasagna which was excellent as well. AND we got a sighting of Gabriele Bonci himself, so I'd say it was a successful detour. Bottom line, if you want to wait in a line and try Bonci's exotic stuff, then stop by the pizzeria. If you just want to experience his pizza to see why it's fundamentally excellent and you're ok with a limited selection (and don't care to wait in a long line) then this location is the place for you.

We found this place as we searched for convenient place for lunch near the Vatican. When we asked our concierge he got so excited and shared how it was featured on Netflix! It was definitely worth the cab ride ($12-13) from Vatican. We tried several pizzas, desserts and the meatballs! So good!

With Gabriele Bonci now making his name known stateside a decision to visit the Bakery at Via Trionfale 36 came easily, and although Pizzarium rightfully gets a lot of press Panificio Bonci flies happily under the radar today just as it has since opening in November 2012. A part of Rome's Trionfale district, easy walking distance from Vatican City but far enough away to not be inundated by tourists, it is even before entering that the smell of yeast is noted, early arrival still finding employees stocking shelves with an assortment of sweet and savory selections. Offering everything from Suppli to Roast Chicken, in addition to Bonci's celebrated Pizette, it is only after thorough perusal that decisions should be made, several Cakes weighed to price tempting but probably best saved for parties of four or more. Open from 08h30 every day but Sunday, with a menu that shifts from morning to night, Breakfast should undoubtedly include one of Panificio Bonci's all-natural Cornetti, in this particular case the version with Honey and Oats infusing an airy base of heritage Flour. Always ingredient focused, Pizette come as small rounds with a chew like Focaccia and Bonci's signature Potato topping should not be missed, though neither should the weighty and moist "Cheesecake" that one-ups New York-style by using Ricotta that is lightly browned atop a Jam-like layer of Cherries.

So you (like me) watched all the food shows talking about pizza in rome, and how it is different from the rest of Italy (especially compared to the neapolitan style), and you want to try the "al taglio" style famous in Rome. You search for the Bonci Pizzarium, see al the great reviews and decide to go there, just to find the infinite line and the accelerated pace of the counter order. Here is the tip - come to the Panificio - the sister location, at a stone throw from the main Pizzarium (also from the Vatican, in case you went to see the Pope) - not only you will enjoy the pizza (I get it, the selection is limited, but it will be great, regardless), but will also get the chance to buy some bread with the locals - most of the people when I was here were all folks that likely live in the neighborhood. Maybe you even get some bread for the next day, to make yourself a sandwich (get some prosciutto and cheese at the closes Carrefour Express store), and have a picnic somewhere. Ah, the pizza, yes, it it great! Nice and airy, something that you need to try when in Rome. Ask for the recommendation from the person behind the counter - "per favore, quale pizza mi consigliere" - and enjoy! As good as it gets for pizza al taglio and neighborhood bakeries in Rome!

Thinking back this place was good compared to a lot of places we tried in Rome. It's literally pizza by the pound. You take a number and once your number is called you go up and order. They cut the pizzas and weigh it and you're charged by the weight. We tried the potato pizza which was the best out of the 3 that we tried. We also got this mozzarella and pepper one and this pate one. I suggest getting something simple and something that doesn't have too much on it as the pizza will get really soggy and gross at the end. Or just eat really fast. Lol :)
